Why Li-Ion batteries?
These batteries are great! Each NP-battery has fantastic 71 Wh of capacity, is very light in weight and quickly chargeable (I have two IDX Ion-4-Chargers that load up to four batteries at the same time. Unfortunately these chargers are no longer available). As I use a double-battery-compartment I have to change batteries just one time on a typical shooting day, although I use the batteries also for my LED-headlight. With 6 batteries in the equipment I have always enough energy. My new Omega V-Mount-Akkus are even a bit more powerful: 160 Wh from a single battery - unthinkable some years ago.
Why LED headights?
The future belongs to LED technology: just 11 W of energy consumption has the X-3 Lite for a light output that is comparable to a 35 W halogen bulb lamp. The Bebob Lux-LED 16 makes even "50 W" out of 16 W power. Apart from better energy efficiency the long durability goes for the LEDs. They have daylight comparable characteristic - that's why there's no need for a CTB-Filter. If you like to shoot under tungsten conditions you will need a CTO-Filter. I prefer a frost filter plus 1/2-CTO: that's the ideal combination for the CC-filter selection "C" at my Digibeta-Camcorders (color temperature 4300 K).
The only drawback: the LEDs tend to a slight green tint (especially when dimming). For correction I use a light 1/4 magenta filter.
Why "Picture Cache Board"?
My two DigitalBetacam-Camcorder are both equipped with a Picture Cache Board. Any video picture transfers a cache before it is recorded on tape. The capacity of the cache is 8 sec. That means: pictures can be recorded even before the record button was pushed! When the record is stopped, the tape will still run up to 8 sec. It's always possible to start a new record.
Another highlight: you can always leave the camera in "SAVE"-mode if you put the picture cache at at least 4 sec. (DVW-970: 1 sec.). Then you are immediately ready to shoot without loss of any picture.
Advantage: the protection of the video head is incredible (my experience is that the abrasion came down to 1/5!)
The costs of the board will be amortized very soon.
The "DVW-970" is additionaly equipped with a single frame function: you can easily create stop-tricks. After 6 sec. of video are buffered in the picture cache the camera will record the pictures on tape. Great thing!

Why XDCAM?

My latest investment is the SONY camcorder PDW-700/1. It combines a lot of advantages that make it to a future-proof aquirement. On the one hand its mutli-format-abilty: wheather HD or SD, equal if 1080 or 720, wheather "i" (interlaced) or "p" (progressive) - this camcorder handles everything. Additionally this camcorder records so-called "proxy-files" in MPEG-4, that makes storyboard editing on a notebook very easy. The sophisticated workflow convinced in Germany after the broadcast stations WDR (Cologne) and BR (Munich) also other ARD-stations.
An important point is the recording on "Professional Discs": the 23 GB-disc is cheap and can be handled like tapes. In addition it is a perfect archive medium. In the near future SONY will announce an adaptor that makes possible a parallel recording on SxS-cards: so there will be an archive and backup medium (the Professional Disc) and a flash memory card for a fast workflow.
It is easy to get familiar with the camcorder, everything is at its place, the menue is clearly arranged and all settings can be saved on a memory stick.
I have equipped this camcorder with a color viewfinder, a stereo mic and a SD-record option. So it is very close to my "ideal" camcorder...
